Teofimo Lopez Jr., a former unified lightweight champion, needs to justify himself. Due to his first professional loss and nine months of turmoil outside the ring, Saturday’s comeback has taken on a must-see vibe.
It won’t take away from the interest to see one of boxing’s brightest emerging stars try to restart his career knowing Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs) will be as high as a -3000 betting favorite when he makes his 140-pound debut against Pedro Campa (34-1-1, 23 KOs) at Resorts World Las Vegas.
Lopez, 25, didn’t just collapse in his split-decision defeat to George Kambosos Jr. in November, when he was knocked down in the first round and thoroughly outmatched for the rest of the fight despite many comeback. It was the way he emphasized a possible conspiracy after the fact to explain why he had lost, accusing DAZN, the streaming service that had gained the right to televise the fight after Triller forfeited, of pressuring the judges.
Later, it was revealed that Lopez had previously experienced a potentially fatal esophageal rip that was first missed by medical professionals before the Kambosos bout, which was repeatedly postponed. Later, Lopez would also admit that his now-ex-wife, Cynthia, left him when she was carrying their kid during training camp.
