As they attempt to gain momentum following a Premier League victory this past weekend that set a club record, Liverpool will face a challenging test against a tenacious Newcastle United.
After a sluggish start to the season, Liverpool quickly recovered from their defeat at Old Trafford and turned their anger toward recently promoted Bournemouth over the weekend, thrashing Scott Parker’s team 9-0.
Liverpool has only ever scored nine goals in a league game twice, the first occasion coming against Crystal Palace in 1989.
Jurgen Klopp’s team moved up to ninth in the Premier League table as a consequence, and in the next weeks, they will try to make up lost ground on the top four.
It was a much-needed morale-boosting victory for the Reds after they had only gained two points from their opening three Premier League contests.
Klopp will now attempt to put together a run of victories. The game against Newcastle on Wednesday, though, will be a tougher test for Liverpool and a better indicator of their tenacity since the visitors are unbeaten in five games this season entering this trip to Anfield.
With a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday at the Molineux, Newcastle’s perfect start to the new season maintained.
Until Allan Saint-Maximin hammered an artful volley past Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa to rescue a point in the Black Country, the Magpies appeared headed for a letdown.
Eddie Howe’s team has now drawn three straight league games since defeating Nottingham Forest on the season’s opening day, something Newcastle supporters will gladly accept given their recent performance there.
In the same game last season, Liverpool defeated Newcastle 3-1. It was a very easy win for the Reds, who also defeated Newcastle twice in the Premier League.
However, under Howe’s leadership, Newcastle are a threat and a force to be feared.
They’ve already proven they can compete with better teams by drawing 3-3 with Manchester City at St.

For the match against Newcastle, Liverpool will once again be without Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay, and Naby Keita.
The match is likely to be too soon for Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara, even if both players are now getting closer to returns. Darwin Nunez is still suspended as well.
Harvey Elliott will be available to start against the Magpies because he was substituted against Bournemouth as a precaution. It would not be surprising to see Klopp use the same lineup.
Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson, and Saint-Maximin are all serious doubts for Newcastle and are not expected to be available for selection.
Isak is slated to make his debut, although the Swedish player is likely to come off the bench as Chris Wood is expected to direct the visiting team’s attack at Anfield.
Howe will be without a number of first-team players for the game, including Emil Krafth and Jonjo Shelvey for the Magpies.
In case Saint-Maximin is unable to play, Ryan Fraser will likely take Saint-place Maximin’s in the middle of the field with Joe Willock and Joelinton.
