Deontay Wilder hasn’t entered a boxing ring to face anyone save Tyson Fury in more than a thousand days. The former WBC heavyweight champion fights Robert Helenius on Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in an effort to move past the Tyson Fury controversy (9 p.m. ET, FOX PPV).
Since their first encounter, which resulted in a contentious split draw in December 2018, Wilder’s career has been intertwined with Fury’s. Fury defeated Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KO) twice to put an end to their rivalry, which eliminated Wilder from consideration for the world championship for the first time since he won the WBC crown in 2015.
When he squares off against Helenius, boxing legend Wilder, one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, will try to return to his former self (31-3, 20 KO). Four of Wilder’s 41 career knockout victories have occurred inside Barclays Center, and only one of his opponents other than Tyson Fury has been able to make it to the judges’ scorecards.
At the pre-fight press conference on Thursday, Wilder stated, “I’ve had some of my most dramatic and exciting knockouts and most joyful moments in this venue. “The moment I stepped off the plane, the atmosphere was just incredible. I almost consider it to be a second home. I always show up here and provide my finest performances. I expect nothing less than a fantastic performance. The audience will receive a reward. There is a lot at stake, and I believe I have the ideal opponent to provide the fans with what they want to see.”
