It is rare for a champion to chase a challenger, but that’s what happened to Devin Haney, who has been waiting for his chance to fight against former unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Since he won the interim WBC title in 2019 and became the full champion, “The Dream” wanted to fight Lomachenko, who was the WBA, WBO, and IBF lightweight champion. Unfortunately, he didn’t want to fight against the former champion.
After defeating George Kambosos in 2022, Haney became the undisputed champion. He then chased the man who didn’t want to fight him after he successfully defended his titles against Kambosos again last year.
Lomachenko then gave the opportunity to Haney to become the champion after he had to withdraw from his fight against Kambosos so he could defend his home country against Russia. In October, he defeated Jamaine Ortiz and became the mandatory challenger for the American.
