Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will meet in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday, trying to advance to the final next month.

For the first time in 2022, the Carabao Cup returns with its last stage, with four matches scheduled over the next week to select the two finals. The first of these clashes will be the first leg of the semi-finals between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, which will take place on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had to fight hard to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The Blues required penalty shootout victories against Aston Villa and Southampton to go to the quarter-finals, when they defeated Brentford 2-0 to set up a match against Tottenham. Spurs’ path to the semi-finals has been as difficult, with narrow victories against Wolves, Burnley, and West Ham United putting them in the final four.

Chelsea’s recent run has been dismal, with the Blues winning only three of their past nine games in all competitions. Their last two meetings, including a 2-2 tie with Liverpool this past weekend, have all finished in a deadlock. Tottenham, on the other hand, has gone undefeated in domestic competitions since Antonio Conte came over as manager, with their most recent result being a 1-0 victory against Watford.

Chelsea and Tottenham have previously met this season, with the Blues winning 3-0 in September thanks to goals from Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante, and Antonio Rudiger for the Blues. The Hard Tackle examines the matchup before of the most recent game between the two teams.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Head to head :

  • The latest encounter had ended in a 0-3 win for the Blues.
  • The hosts had scored two or more goals in 11 of the previous 13 clashes at this ground.
  • In the past six-year period, the hosts have kept just two clean sheets at this stadium.
  • Eight of the previous eleven meetings at this venue had three or more goals.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction :

In recent weeks, neither team has been particularly effective in the final third. And the match on Wednesday might be a tense affair between two teams desperate to avoid surrendering too many goals and letting the tie slip away before the second leg.

It should set the stage for a thrilling but difficult match between Chelsea and Tottenham, with nothing separating them. In the end, Son Heung-min and Romelu Lukaku should score, resulting in a 1-1 tie between the London rivals, with the second leg to be played next week.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Team News :

Following his revealing interview, Lukaku was withdrawn from the team to face Liverpool at the weekend, although he may return after an apology, while Edouard Mendy is with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Timo Werner may be able to return from COVID-19 in time to play, while Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Andreas Christensen are set to miss out.

Due to the absence of Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga will take over in goal, while Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and maybe even Saul Niguez can expect to play from the start.

Steven Bergwijn, Cristian Romero, and Ryan Sessegnon are all out for Spurs, but Conte has no new injury worries following the victory against Watford.

Given how hard he pushed his established first XI over the Christmas season, the Italian may be forced into some rotation tonight, with Japhet Tanganga and Harry Winks both potential possibilities to start.

In the final third, Bryan Gil and Dele Alli might give some fresh legs, but Harry Kane will once again lead the assault due to a lack of viable options.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Sarr; Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso; Ziyech, Pulisic; Havertz

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:

Lloris; Tanganga, Sanchez, Davies; Emerson, Winks, Hojbjerg, Reguilon; Son, Kane, Gil
